Upgrading your hero is crucial, and a great way of doing so is using the skill tree. You will find a bunch of upgrades that you can unlock to make all of your heroes permanently stronger. 

 There are two branches in the skill tree, one which you can unlock upgrades with coins and the other one has fewer but stronger upgrades. This other branch uses Spores to unlock the upgrades. These can be found by completing trials.
